La Borgatta

La Borgatta

So often Barbera can underwhelm, but not here. It needs time, sure, but with five years bottle age that seems to have done the trick. This really is on point. Great balance of tension, acidity and tannin. It's edgy and grown up, but still very drinkable. Just 1200 bottles made.

From vines aged over 70 years, planted in the Ovada region of the Monferrato, on red clay. In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed, and the wines ferment naturally in 60-year old concrete vats. After fermentation, they press, and the wine is racked into steel tanks where it stays on the lees for one year or so, after which they bottle the wine. They rarely release the Barbera before it has aged for five years.

Tasting notes

Proper Italian trattoria vibes. Yes, it's rustic and old school, yet at the same time so soft (tannins) and incredibly elegant. Whether it's lunchtime, afternoon or evening, this is a wine for all occasions. The fruit is vibrant (wild strawberry and cherry), yet we also have the classic Langhe notes of leather, iron and spice. Seriously impressive. One for fans of Barbaresco and Barolo.
