We all love loves high-quality Chardonnay from Burgundy and The Jura (right, yes?!), but what about a high altitude, mountain expression from Bugey? Hmmmm. Well, that's exactly what we have here from Clément Bärtschi, part of a new generation of winemaker from the East part of France. Having grown up on a family farm in Bugey, Clément spread his wings by applying his trade working for Rhone powerhouse M Chapoutier and the baller Domaine Romanée-Conti of Burgundy. Pretty sure those names will be familiar, and quite the decent pedigree. Oooomph!

Having studied (enology and viticulture) and learnt a thing or two from those esteemed houses, Clément decided it was about time to set-up a solo project in a lesser known region, by returning to his native home back in 2019. He soon purchased 2 hectares in Manicle, a small mountain appellation, where Clément is one of our three winemakers in the region. Yes, that's right, three!

Required by law in Manicle, he could only grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, until very recently, where he is now able to work on native varieties Altesse, Jacquère and Mondeuse. All the fruit is handpicked, gently pressed and sees minimal maceration. All work in the vineyard and winery is solely done by Clément. The style is typically Burgundian, with the balance of cool climate and subtle flavour that Bugey (and Savoie) bring to the table.

Without doubt, the wine world is now becoming more interested in the diversity of this part of France (thanks, Jura), and we love backing a project that is firmly on the money. His Chardonnay's and Pinot Noir are absolutely delightful, and we are excited to try his new wines coming in 2025. On the evidence of the terroir and winemaker, this is a Domaine to watch.
