Favaro
This small family winery is located in Piverone, not far from Turin, in the Alto Piemonte. It was founded by Benito Favaro in the 1990's, before he was joined by his two sons (Camillo and Nicola) and daughter Elena. Vineyards are nowadays tended by Benito and Nicola, and in the cellar by Camillo. Mother nature has certainly played its part in creating an unusual terroir in the region, where the product of ancient glacial activity results in some of the finest Alpine influences in the wines. Production is tiny, so best to enjoy when able.
Led by the well-travelled Camillo, his influence appears quite profound. Not only has Camillo written the best book on Burgundy that we've read (highly recommended for anyone that wants to know what to buy without the pretentious guff!), whilst spending social time as a graphic design artist and photographer, but the man is also working wonders with the local Erbaluce grape. No doubt it's his love of Burgundy that has allowed him to craft such thoughtful wines from a region largely unknown to much of the wine drinking world. Yes, his reds are deliciously elegant (and great value), but his whites are something else. Unique and defined. Benchmark setting. Top of the pops.
