Iandolo
An Italian white wine with real pedigree from Piemonte, this time Derthona (sometimes referred to as Colli Tortonesi), which derives from the Timorasso grape. While it's true that we are beginning to see a resurgence in Derthona, it still boggles the mind that too few Barolo/Barbera producers dedicate time trying to cultivate this exceptional indigenous varietal. Our advice would be to rip up those chardonnay vines - and other French sorts - clear the space and instead get some Timorasso vines in the ground, pronto!
Despite the shallow pool of producer numbers, arguably Timorasso's finest characteristic is the breadth of wide ranging expressions to be found. This speaks highly to its versatility in and out of the cellar. From Borgnogno's stonking top tier example, which is so complex, powerful and dreamy, to the more floral, creamy and balanced offering from Vietti. We then have quite a different interpretation entirely in the form of more straightforward steely, piercing quality that is on display here from Iandolo.
Francesco is a relatively new winemaker, having left behind a finance background in Milan, with his first Timorasso vintage in 2019 coming from a rented 30 year old vineyard. He also owns two small Barbera vineyards, which represents his red wine output. There is nothing flashy and it's all rather understated. Preferring to let the wine do the talking. We are happy to listen. And of course, enjoy a glass or two in the process!
