In the heart of the Alto Piemonte, Daniele is making some mighty fine wines, and seemingly having good fun in the process. For a man who once described to us the comparables between drinking Nebbiolo and the art of lovemaking, it's hard not to be enamoured with his warm character and exuberance. Happily, this energy flows rather nicely through to his wines.

Villa Guelpa's first wines were released in 2016, so still relatively new on the wine scene, but they very quickly saw critical acclaim with proper good back to back vintages, which lead to envious looks from neighbouring wineries. Not afraid to stir up a hornets' nest, some serious capital has gone into everything at the estate from land preservation and cellar restoration to parcel growth outside of their local boundaries. Lessona and Sizzano are the main Nebbiolo driven wines, which are distinctively unique, but Daniele also makes a delicious Boca, though sadly production of this is tiny.

As one of the first red wines we drank from the Alto region a good few years back, there will always be a seat at the table for Villa Guelpa. The wines are modern, energised, bright, and oh so wonderfully expressive. This is an appellation that reveals the fruit forward side of Nebbiolo, which is balanced by inclusion of a small percentage of indigenous grapes. Find some time, grab yourself a big glass and enjoy.
