Marchand de Cailloux
Welcome to Jura, chardonnay, limestone and acidity. You won't forget it in a hurry. I'm not sure what music Cédric Mottet is trying to create here, but to us it sounds like a two minute ripping guitar solo from a 1980s thrash metal band. We approve.
The fruit comes off two plots in the village of Arbois facing south and east with limestone gravel atop grey marls. From vines that are 70 years of old, on parcels at an altitude of 300m. Hand harvested, the grapes are whole cluster pressed in the cellar. The juice sees one night of cold settling, before racking and fermentation into used 228L oak barrels. The wine then spends two years in used barrel (approx 8 years old), before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, which adds another dimension to the texture.
Tasting notes
This is the full works. Lively and electric on the nose. Tang-tastic flavour that coats your mouth. A real rush. The slight taste of oak attempts some balance, but the acidity really cuts through. A wine to enjoy in the company of others. Strap yourself in!
